Beloved, the Bible teaches that listening to God requires a willing, obedient heart, quieted by faith to receive guidance, as shown in scriptures. like Samuel said “Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening”.
Here are some guidelines to help us listen to God;
Studying Scripture enough to discern His voice.
Practicing obedience to His Word.
Cultivating stillness in His presence without distractions.
and praying with expectancy.
WE ARE TO COME FULLY PRESENT BEFORE GOD
We to fix our attention fully on Jesus and away from distractions .
Hebrews 12:2 NIV tells us…
“ fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.”
WE SHOULD EXERCISE CHRIST’S AUTHORITY OVER ALL OTHER VOICES.
We are to pray, “In the name of Jesus Christ”, and command all other voices to be silent. “
James 4:7 NIV command us to…
“ Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.”
Acts 16:18 NIV says…
“ She kept this up for many days. Finally Paul became so annoyed that he turned around and said to the spirit, “In the name of Jesus Christ I command you to come out of her!” At that moment the spirit left her.”
ASK THE TRIUNE GOD, THREE-IN-ONE TO REVEAL HIMSELF IN A SPECIAL WAY
Cry out to God the Father, God the son and the Holy Spirit.
Psalms 70:1 NIV encourages to…
“ Hasten, O God, to save me; come quickly, Lord, to help me.”
ASK GOD TO SEARCH YOUR HEART
Talk to Him about what He reveals to you, confess any known sin.
Psalms 139:23-24 declares…
“ Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.”
ASK JESUS TO COMMUNICATE WITH YOU
We should ask God in prayer to communicate is heart desires to us.
I Samuel 3:10 tells us we can listen to God “speak” to our heart.
“ The Lord came and stood there, calling as at the other times, “Samuel! Samuel!” Then Samuel said, “Speak, for your servant is listening.””
Also, John 16:12-14 NIV
“ I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear. But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. He will glorify me because it is from me that he will receive what he will make known to you”
WAIT IN SILENCE
We must wait on God to respond to us after asking Him to communicate with us.
Psalms 62:1 NIV reminds us to find rest in God
“Truly my soul finds rest in God; my salvation comes from him.”
WRITE DOWN IMPRESSIONS
We must make the effort to write down thoughts and guidance as revealed to us.
This helps us to obey God as we implement His guidance and instructions.
Usually this will be thoughts, images , or Scripture that enters your heart and mind.
1 Corinthians 2:12 -16 says..
“Just as a body, though one, has many parts, but all its many parts form one body, so it is with Christ. For we were all baptized by one Spirit so as to form one body—whether Jews or Gentiles, slave or free—and we were all given the one Spirit to drink. Even so the body is not made up of one part but of many. Now if the foot should say, “Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body,” it would not for that reason stop being part of the body. And if the ear should say, “Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body,” it would not for that reason stop being part of the body.”
TEST IMPRESSIONS WITH GOD’S WORD AND HIS CHARACTER
Don’t suppress the Spirit or stifle God’s communication, but don’t be gullible. Check it out carefully; keep only what passes the test.
1 Thessalonians 5:19-22 NIV
“Do not quench the Spirit. Do not treat prophecies with contempt but test them all; hold on to what is good, reject every kind of evil.”
NOW LET US PRAY
Most Holy God, thank You for this day, and for helping us to hear You.
Father give us the spirit that seek you, so we can hear You.
Holy Spirit, teach us to listen for You whenever You communicate with us.
Lord, help us to hear and obey Your will.
Abide with us today Lord.
