Beloved, the Bible teaches that our response to God’s word should transform our thoughts, heart, and daily actions if respond to it with obedience, humility, and action.
Scripture outlines several specific, active ways we should respond when we encounter God’s truth.
As believers in Christ, Active Responses to the Word of God were commanded …
WE ARE TO OBEY IMMEDIATELY
James 1:22 warns against just listening to the word; you must do what it says.
“But prove yourselves doers of the word [actively and continually obeying God’s precepts], and not merely listeners [who hear the word but fail to internalize its meaning], deluding yourselves [by unsound reasoning contrary to the truth].” – James 1:22 AMP
WE ARE TO RECEIVE IT WITH HUMILITY
James 1:21 tells believers to humbly accept the word planted in them.
“So get rid of all uncleanness and all that remains of wickedness, and with a humble spirit receive the word [of God] which is implanted [actually rooted in your heart], which is able to save your souls.” – James 1:21 AMP
WE ARE TO TREMBLE WITH RESPECT TO IT
Isaiah 66:2 says God looks favorably on those who respect and tremble at His word.
““For all these things My hand has made, So all these things came into being [by and for Me],” declares the Lord. “But to this one I will look [graciously], To him who is humble and contrite in spirit, and who [reverently] trembles at My word and honors My commands. [John 4:24]” – Isaiah 66:2 AMP
WE ARE TO GUARD IT SAFELY
Luke 11:28 calls people blessed who hear the word of God and keep it safely.
“But He said, “On the contrary, blessed (happy, favored by God) are those who hear the word of God and continually observe it.” – Luke 11:28 AMP
WE ARE TO MEMORIZE IT DEEPLY
Memorize it deeply: Psalm 119:11 talks about hiding God’s word in your heart to avoid sin.
“Your word I have treasured and stored in my heart, That I may not sin against You.”- Psalms 119:11 AMP
WE ARE TO MEDITATE ON IT
“This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall read [and meditate on] it day and night, so that you may be careful to do [everything] in accordance with all that is written in it; for then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will be successful.” – Joshua 1:8 AMP
WE ARE TO SHARE IT BOLDLY
Colossians 3:16 encourages letting the message of Christ dwell in you to teach others.
“Let the [spoken] word of Christ have its home within you [dwelling in your heart and mind—permeating every aspect of your being] as you teach [spiritual things] and admonish and train one another with all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs with thankfulness in your hearts to God.” – Colossians 3:16 AMP
WE ARE TO TRUST IT COMPLETELY
Trust it completely: Proverbs 30:5 states that every word of God is flawless and a shield to those who trust Him.
“Every word of God is tested and refined [like silver]; He is a shield to those who trust and take refuge in Him.” – Proverbs 30:5 AMP
WE ARE TO ACCEPT IT LIKE GOOD SOIL
Jesus shares in Matthew 13:23 that a good heart hears, understands the word, and produces good results.
“And the one on whom seed was sown on the good soil, this is the one who hears the word and understands and grasps it; he indeed bears fruit and yields, some a hundred times [as much as was sown], some sixty [times as much], and some thirty.” – Matthew 13:23 AMP
