Wisdom: Someone You Should Know

Can you imagine your life being guided with discernment, good judgement and power?

Dictionary.com defines wisdom as “the ability to discern or judge what is true, right, or lasting.”  Biblical wisdom, however, is all these and more. Biblical wisdom is God’s wisdom and it is different from man’s or worldly wisdom.

Wisdom is the power of God. In 1 Corinthians 1:18, we are told “For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.” This power is the message of Jesus’ death on the cross; and His resurrection is the expression of God’s love and redemption toward the sin-sick world, which includes you and me. The wisdom of God is a person, Jesus Christ and the work of Jesus Christ.  These give the power of God for salvation to all who will believe.

In 1 Corinthians 1:23-25, we are told “…we preach Christ crucified: a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, but to those whom God has called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ [is] the power of God and the wisdom of God. For the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than human strength.”

In the Old Testament, before Christ, wisdom is mentioned several times in the book of Proverbs. In fact Biblical wisdom is considered a person wherever it is referenced in Proverbs. Wisdom is described as performing the tasks of a person, so let’s look at some examples in scripture of this person called Wisdom:

  • Proverbs 1:20-21 (NIV), “Out in the open wisdom calls aloud, she raises her voice in the public square; on top of the wall she cries out, at the city gate she makes her speech.”
  • Proverbs 1:23 (NIV), wisdom continues to speak, “Repent at my rebuke! Then I will pour out my thoughts to you,  I will make known to you my teachings.”
  • Proverbs‬ ‭8:12‬ (‭NIV), “I wisdom, dwell together with prudence; I possess knowledge and discretion.”

Finally, 1 Corinthians 1:30  states “It is because of him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God—that is, our righteousness, holiness and redemption.”

Wisdom, my dear friends, is someone you should know for your life!

PRAYER:

Holy God, we pray that You bless us with the grace to know Your wisdom, so that we do not sabotage our lives. Amen.
