The Truth Will Set You Free – By Iwalola(Lola) Ademodi Oshinowo

Jesus said to the people who believed in him, “You are truly my disciples if you remain faithful to my teachings. And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

-John 8:31

The promise “you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free” is often separated from the condition: if you are disciples of my teaching. In other words, it is our study of the Bible with the intention to obey that helps us discern truth from error and frees us from futility.

The more you know the Bible, the more you will understand the truth and be free from the grip of sin and falsehood.

The people Jesus was speaking to thought they were free. They had never been imprisoned and were, in fact, part of the religious elite. But in reality, they were still slaves to sin. What they needed was to become a part of God’s family so that they could be truly free.

Our place in God’s family is secure. You are His child forever, and because of that status, you can live a life of freedom. Jesus has freed us from the compulsion to sin. He has given you His Word so you can know His heart. He has given you a new heart and a new mind that can discern truth and walk in it. He has freed you from the fear of death and given you a secure hope. He has released you from the need to please others or to earn His favor. Now, walk faithfully in your freedom!

Jesus told him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life.

No one can come to the Father except through me.”

-John 14:6
