~ A REFLECTION OF A YEAR OF LIFE
The last few days of the year calls for us to reflect on the past year of life.
How was your year, really?
For some of us It has been a great year
For some it has been a “So, So” year, not great and not bad
For others they may consider the year a bad year
I don’t know about you, personally, the fact that God in His infinite mercy has allowed me to to have yet another year on this side of heaven, while still standing, regardless of what transpired during the year brings me to deep gratitude to God.
I grew up in an Anglican church, one of the hymns that is endearing to me, especially during this time of the year, which also helps in reflecting on the past year is “ O God, Our help in ages past”
The hymn “O God, Our Help in Ages Past” is based on Psalm 90:4, which says, “For in Your sight a thousand years are like yesterday that passes by, like a few hours of the night”.
The hymn was written by Isaac Watts (1674-1748), who is often called the “Father of English hymnody”.
Watts composed the hymn in 1708 as a metrical paraphrase of Psalm 90.
The hymn’s main message is the contrast between God and humanity, with God being timeless and humanity being ephemeral i.e temporal or short lived.
Let us employ this hymn to help us in our reflection
Some of the lyrics from the hymn include:
Stanza 1
Our God, our help in ages past (a reflection that God has been our help throughout the year and beyond)
Our hope for years to come ( a reflection that we have hope in God for the coming year and beyond)
Our shelter from the stormy blast ( a reflection that God had sheltered us throughout the year from storms of life)
And our eternal home ( God promised us eternal life through Jesus Christ. He is our eternal home)
Stanza 2
Under the shadow of your throne your saints have dwelt secure;
(Saints, who are believers in Christ are secure under the shadow of God’s throne. Our security in in Him)
Sufficient is your arm alone, and our defense is sure ( a reflection that our defense is sufficiently sure in God’s arm)
Stanza 3
A thousand ages in your sight are like an evening gone, (God is eternal, timeless and self existing. He is the same yesterday, today and tomorrow)
Short as the watch that ends the night before the rising sun (a reflection that God watches us day and night)
Stanza 4
Time, like an ever-rolling stream, bears all its sons away ( a reflection once again that God is timeless, unlike us humans)
They fly, forgotten, as a dream dies at the opening day( a reflection that time flies for us humans and sometimes dreams dies. Only what God has done in our lives matters)

NOW LET US PRAY
Sovereign God, thank You for being our help in ages past.
Thanks You Father for being our hope for years to come.
Thank you for sheltering us from the stormy blasts of life.
We glorify You, Lord for being our eternal home.
You are sufficiently enough for us. Therefore we bless Your Holy name.
I am amazed at Your timelessness, there’s no one like you Lord.
God we adore You. Thanks You for being an eternal and never changing God.
Thank You for the hope of a future, and another coming year that we have, to live our lives to do Your will.
In the majestic name of Jesus Christ, I have prayed. Amen
Have a blessed day
