~ God’s purpose for creating emotions in us.
We serve a God who expressed emotions throughout scripture where God expresses emotions.
We see God hates (Jacob I loved Esau I have hated).
We see God loves (for God so loved the world).
We see God sad, (Jesus wept).
We see God angry (God feels indignation everyday).
We see God pleased (my beloved Son in whom I am well pleased).
We see God grieved (it grieved God that he created us).
We see God jealous (for I am a jealous God).
We see God rejoice (he will rejoice over you with gladness).
God has emotions. We are made in his image, therefore we are emotional people.
Without emotions we would not be able to live out the two greatest commandments: love God and love others.
We would not be able to have a relationship with God or with each other.
We need our emotions in order to worship God with, joy, happiness, and adoration.
If Christlikeness is our goal as His followers, that would include not only Christlike behavior and thoughts, but also Christlike emotions as well.
The Holy Spirit brings fruit into the life of the believer which is riddled with emotions – love, joy, peace, kindness, gentleness – which make us more like Christ.
Galatians 5:22-23 AMP confirm the statement. “But the fruit of the Spirit [the result of His presence within us] is love [unselfish concern for others], joy, [inner] peace, patience [not the ability to wait, but how we act while waiting], kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such things there is no law.”
These are positive emotions. However, the Word of God warns us about negative emotions.
Galatians 5:19-21 AMP tells us “Now the practices of the sinful nature are clearly evident: they are sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality (total irresponsibility, lack of self-control), idolatry, sorcery, hostility, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, disputes, dissensions, factions [that promote heresies], envy, drunkenness, riotous behavior, and other things like these. I warn you beforehand, just as I did previously, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.”
Ephesians 4:26 TPT warns “But don’t let the passion of your emotions lead you to sin! Don’t let anger control you or be fuel for revenge, not for even a day.”
NOW LET US PRAY
Father, thank You for creating us with emotions as part of our DNA of being created in Your image, because You also have positive emotions towards us.
Lord, give us the grace to know how to navigate and manage our emotions effectively so that Your holy name is glorified in our lives. In Jesus’ mighty name I pray. Amen
