In the Gospel of Luke, we find Maryβs praise, some call it a song.
Here she is praising the God who has chosen her to be the mother of His only son.
Maryβs words are powerful and hold lessons we can learn today.
I figured that her words would assist us in giving God the praise He deserves for allowing Jesus Christ to be born just to save humanity.
Maryβs words are found in Luke 1:46-55.
In this verses, Mary is visiting with her cousin Elizabeth, the mother of John the Baptist.
Upon that visit, Elizabeth asked in verse 43, βHow could this happen to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?β
Mary is aware that she is going to give birth to the Christ child.
The angel Gabriel has spoken to her and shared Godβs plan. But it seems that when she hears Elizabethβs question, she is overtaken with a spirit of praise.
Mary is not just sharing her thoughts with her cousin. She is saying that the Lord is great, and her spirit is rejoicing with the news that has come to her.
Today, Maryβs song is called:
The Magnificat, meaning βmy soul magnifies the Lordβ in Latin.
What Is the Significance of Maryβs Song?
One might wonder why Maryβs song would be considered significant. Are they not just words spoken in a moment of happiness?
The truth is that her song speaks of who she is and how deep her faith is.
In verses 46-47 she says,
βMy soul praises the greatness of the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior.β
Maryβs faith was rooted in Jewish tradition.
We can surmise that she has come from a devout Jewish family and she believes in the God of her ancestors.

βAnd Mary said,
My soul magnifies and exalts the Lord, And my spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior.
For He has looked [with loving care] on the humble state of His maidservant;
For behold, from now on all generations will count me blessed and happy and favored by God!
For He who is mighty has done great things for me;
And holy is His name [to be worshiped in His purity, majesty, and glory].
And His mercy is upon generation after generation Toward those who [stand in great awe of God and] fear Him. [Ps 103:17]
He has done mighty deeds with His [powerful] arm; He has scattered those who were proud in the thoughts of their heart.
He has brought down rulers from their thrones, And exalted those who were humble.
He has filled the hungry with good things; And sent the rich away empty-handed.
He has helped His servant Israel, In remembrance of His mercy, Just as He promised to our fathers, To Abraham and to his descendants forever.β
And Mary stayed with Elizabeth for about three months, and then returned to her home.β
Glory and adoration to Godβs Holy name.
In Jesus Christ most majestic name we have praised! Amen
Have a blessed day ![]()
