~ GOD HAD A SPECIAL HOMETOWN FOR JESUS
”Jesus the Nazarene” signifies that Jesus was from Nazareth, a small, relatively insignificant town in Galilee, which according to the Bible, is where he grew up.
The title “Nazarene” is linked to his humble origins and the idea that the Messiah would come from an unexpected place, fulfilling prophecies about a “despised” or “lowly” savior; this is primarily referenced in the Gospel of Matthew, where it is stated that Jesus would be “called a Nazarene” to fulfill scripture.
Matthew clarifies how Nazareth plays a role in God’s plan: it was to be the place after which the Messiah would “be called.” In other words, the significance of Nazareth consists in how it would become part of Jesus’ public identity.
Matthew 2:23 states “…and they went and settled in a city called Nazareth. This was to fulfill what was spoken through the prophets: “He shall be called a Nazarene.””
He is saying that Jesus is a man set apart to God in an ultimate sense, who is also the humble, overlooked, rejected Messiah.
Nazareth was not considered a prestigious place in Jewish society, so calling Jesus a Nazarene could be seen as highlighting his humble background.
The word “Nazareth” comes from the root nazar, meaning “to separate,” as in the Nazarite vow.
The people of Nazareth were more conservative that those of most Jewish towns.
They separated themselves from other people and from sin. In social, religious and moral customs, they were extremely separated to God.
Jesus was as separated as the people of Nazareth because He was God.
Jesus was separate from worldly and secular trends because He was raised in a town called Separated Ones.
Jesus was a Nazarene.
