Beloved, the Bible speaks extensively about resting in God, emphasizing that true rest is found in Him.
This rest is not merely physical inactivity but a spiritual state of reliance on God, finding peace and security in His presence, and ceasing from reliance on one’s own efforts.
Here are some truths from the Word of God on how to find real rest.
𝐑𝐄𝐀𝐋 𝐑𝐄𝐒𝐓 𝐈𝐒 𝐀 𝐆𝐈𝐅𝐓 𝐅𝐑𝐎𝐌 𝐆𝐎𝐃
While many of us can feel that needing to rest is a sign of weakness or laziness, God offers rest as a blessing to those who trust Him fully.
In peace I will lie down and sleep; for you alone, Lord, make me dwell in safety. – Psalm 4:8
I will refresh the weary and satisfy the faint – Jeremiah 31:25
But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint – Isaiah 40:31
𝐑𝐄𝐀𝐋 𝐑𝐄𝐒𝐓 𝐈𝐒 𝐑𝐄𝐂𝐄𝐈𝐕𝐄𝐃 𝐈𝐍 𝐂𝐇𝐑𝐈𝐒𝐓 (𝐌𝐀𝐓𝐓𝐇𝐄𝐖 𝟏𝟏:𝟐𝟖-𝟑𝟎)
Jesus invites us in Matthew 11:28-30 AMP
” Come to Me, all who are weary and heavily burdened [by religious rituals that provide no peace], and I will give you rest [refreshing your souls with salvation].
Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me [following Me as My disciple], for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest (renewal, blessed quiet) for your souls.”
For My yoke is easy [to bear] and My burden is light.”
The psalmist tells us in Psalms 62:1-2 NIV where he found real rest.
” Truly my soul finds rest in God; my salvation comes from him.
Truly he is my rock and my salvation; he is my fortress, I will never be shaken.”
𝐑𝐄𝐀𝐋 𝐑𝐄𝐒𝐓 𝐈𝐒 𝐑𝐎𝐎𝐓𝐄𝐃 𝐈𝐍 𝐅𝐀𝐈𝐓𝐇 (𝐇𝐄𝐁𝐑𝐄𝐖𝐒 𝟒:𝟗-𝟏𝟏)
Hebrews 4:9-11 AMP instructs us…
” So there remains a [full and complete] Sabbath rest for the people of God.
For the one who has once entered His rest has also rested from [the weariness and pain of] his [human] labors, just as God rested from [those labors uniquely] His own.
Let us therefore make every effort to enter that rest [of God, to know and experience it for ourselves], so that no one will fall by following the same example of disobedience [as those who died in the wilderness].”
𝐑𝐄𝐀𝐋 𝐑𝐄𝐒𝐓 𝐈𝐒 𝐖𝐎𝐕𝐄𝐍 𝐈𝐍𝐓𝐎 𝐂𝐑𝐄𝐀𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍
God provides an example of rest in Genesis 2:3 AMP
” So God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it [as His own, that is, set it apart as holy from other days], because in it He rested from all His work which He had created and done.”
𝐑𝐄𝐀𝐋 𝐑𝐄𝐒𝐓 𝐈𝐒 𝐌𝐀𝐑𝐊𝐄𝐃 𝐁𝐘 𝐖𝐎𝐑𝐒𝐇𝐈𝐏 (𝐋𝐄𝐕𝐈𝐓𝐈𝐂𝐔𝐒 𝟐𝟑:𝟑)
Leviticus 23:3 AMP gave instructions on rest and worship to God’s people.
” For six days work may be done, but the seventh day is the Sabbath of complete rest, a holy convocation (calling together). You shall not do any work [on that day]; it is the Sabbath of the Lord wherever you may be.”
𝐑𝐄𝐀𝐋 𝐑𝐄𝐒𝐓 𝐈𝐒 𝐅𝐎𝐔𝐍𝐃 𝐈𝐍 𝐎𝐁𝐄𝐃𝐈𝐄𝐍𝐂𝐄 (𝐉𝐄𝐑𝐄𝐌𝐈𝐀𝐇 𝟔:𝟏𝟔)
Jeremiah 6:16 NIV
”This is what the Lord says: “Stand at the crossroads and look; ask for the ancient paths, ask where the good way is, and walk in it, and you will find rest for your souls. But you said, ‘We will not walk in it.’”
In essence, the Bible encourages believers to find real rest in God by:
Trusting in His promises:
Believing that He will provide, protect, and sustain them.
Seeking His presence:
Spending time in prayer, worship, and reading His Word.
Letting go of their own striving:
Releasing their burdens and anxieties to Him.
Remembering His provision:
Acknowledging His faithfulness in the past and trusting in His continued provision.
Resting in God is not a passive inactivity, but an active engagement with Him, resulting in a deep sense of peace, security, and renewed strength.
𝐍𝐎𝐖 𝐋𝐄𝐓 𝐔𝐒 𝐏𝐑𝐀𝐘
Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of rest.
Thank You for giving us an example on rest in You.
Lord, teach us how to truly rest in You, knowing that You, Jehovah God are enough for us.
Holy Spirit, lead us to real rest in our obedience to Your will.
Jesus, strengthen us to know that true rest is in a relationship with God through You.
Abide with us, Jesus as we abide in You.
