~ EXPERIENCING GOD’S UNCHANGEABILITY
One of the most comforting and awe inspiring characters of God, at least for me as a believer in Jesus Christ is that God is unchanging. This is His nature.
We live in a world that is always changing. People change all the time sometimes depending on their mood or circumstances.
This makes it difficult for us to imagine a being who will never change. But Scripture tells us it is impossible for God to change.
God can’t grow stronger or weaker, nor can he grow better or worse. Neither can He waver between two opinions.
That’s because God is already everything he should be; his nature and his will are unchanging, immutable. But that doesn’t make him rigid, unbending, temperamen-tal, or unpredictable-far from it.
The unchangeable nature of his character assures us that he can always be relied on. He is the rock upon which we stand.
God declared in Malachi 3:6 AMP “For I am the Lord, I do not change [but remain faithful to My covenant with you]; that is why you, O sons of Jacob, have not come to an end.”
The Unchangeability or Immutability of God is an attribute that “God is unchanging in his character, will, and covenant promises.”
God’s immutability defines all God’s other attributes: God is immutably wise, merciful, good, and gracious.
This is why the Word of God said in Hebrews 13:8 AMP “Jesus Christ is [eternally changeless, always] the same yesterday and today and forever.”
To say that God never changes is not to say that he doesn’t shift his strategies to account for changing realities here on earth.
Nothing precludes him from altering the way he accomplishes his purposes. And it’s not to say that he does not allow himself to be moved by our prayers.
God’s immutability applies to his character and to his will:
He always hates sin but longs for sinners to return to him.
He is always just, but his justice is tempered by mercy.
He is always powerful, whether or not he displays that power.
He is always loving, omniscient, near, forgiving, and wise. His attributes never change.
For the believer, two things make change possible: obedience to Christ and the power of the Holy Spirit at work within us.
Hebrews 7:24-25 AMP tells us “Jesus holds His priesthood permanently and without change, because He lives on forever. Therefore He is able also to save forever (completely, perfectly, for eternity) those who come to God through Him, since He always lives to intercede and intervene on their behalf [with God].”
We should admit that we are the ones who need to be different. We should pray that his transforming grace will reshape our minds and hearts until everything about us reflects more of his unchanging goodness.
God is always reliable. We can always trust in His holiness, justice, goodness, love, and every other attribute of His persona.
NOW LET US PRAY
Great and Mighty God, it is awe inspiring that You are unchangeable, and remains the same in Your sovereignty and character. Thank You for providing a steady foundation for those of us who have faith in You. Thank You for being a solid rock on which we can stand. Lord, I trust in Your steady and unchanging promises. This gives us hope and comfort in Your Lordship. Abide with us at all times Lord, shield us from any and all attacks of the enemy. In Jesus Christ’s majestic name, I pray Amen
