You may ask: why is it important for a believer to know who they are in Christ?
In researching this question, I found that it a question that every believer must answer because when we surrender our lives to Jesus Christ, we are a new creation, our old self is gone. Through the grace afforded to us by the work of Christ on the cross, we are no longer the same as we were before we accept the gift of salvation through Christ Jesus.
2 Corinthians 5:17 AMP tells us “Therefore if anyone is in Christ [that is, grafted in, joined to Him by faith in Him as Savior], he is a new creature [reborn and renewed by the Holy Spirit]; the old things [the previous moral and spiritual condition] have passed away. Behold, new things have come [because spiritual awakening brings a new life].”
The purpose of this series of devotionals is to equip us with what it means to be a believer in Christ; those who have surrendered their lives to Jesus. We are wanted by God, we belong to Him.
1 Peter 2:9-10 AMP tells us “But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a consecrated nation, a [special] people for God’s own possession, so that you may proclaim the excellencies [the wonderful deeds and virtues and perfections] of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light. Once you were not a people [at all], but now you are God’s people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.”
Knowing your identity means knowing that you are wanted. That God has not just settled for you, but He has in fact chosen you. Oh, friends, it’s such a wonderful thing to be wanted. And that is what you find here, in this chosen people – a people who once were on the outside, but have been chosen to come on in.
Such knowledge of our identity would empower us to know how to walk in the newness so that we do not stumble in our faith walk with the Lord.
The knowledge of our identity equips us to be battle ready. We become aware of the provisions that God has prepared to get us ready for when the enemy attacks and we have to be ready to play “offense”
Knowing our identity would serve as a source of protection and defense when needed.
Our identity also tells us where we belong.
We need – to belong. To identify with a group of people. To love what they love and value what they value. And that’s a question we seem to always be seeking to answer, for in all of us, there is a desire to belong. To know the inside jokes. To be accepted. To be deeply known. We belong to the people of God: His church.
NOW LET US PRAY
Father in heaven, thank You for the new life that You give to each one of us when we submit our lives to Jesus Christ. Thank You for the new identity that comes with it. Lord, as we start this series of devotionals, lead, guide, and direct us to what You want us to know about our identity in Christ. Abide with us and open our minds to receive what You want us to know. In Jesus’ Mighty name I pray. Amen
Have a blessed day
