The phrase comes from Psalm 90:12, which saysβ¦
“So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom”.
This verse is a prayer, Moses asks God to help him understand the shortness of life so that he can live wisely and focus on eternity.
So, what does it mean to βNumber our days?
To “number our days” means to recognize the brevity and finitude of life and, therefore, to live with purpose and wisdom.
Numbering our days is a call to appreciate each day as a gift, steward time wisely, focus on eternal matters rather than fleeting pleasures, and cultivate a heart of wisdom by understanding our place in relation to God’s timelessness.

Birthdays are God-given reminders that life is a gift. Each year marks another chapter in our journey of life, a time to reflect, rejoice, and realign ourselves to the desires of our creator.

It involves understanding that life on Earth is temporary and that our days are limited, a contrast to God’s eternal nature.
Because life here on Earth is very brief compared to eternity which is Forever, we must invest our time on things that are eternal.
The eternal hope of Christ gives purpose to our days. There is a destination weβre headed to β a hope not yet fully realized β and this world is not it.
2 Corinthians 4:18 (NIV) tells usβ¦
οΏ½“So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal”.
This verse emphasizes shifting focus from temporary earthly things to the eternal.
Colossians 3:1-2 tells usβ¦
οΏ½“Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things”.
This verses encourages focusing thoughts on heavenly things rather than worldly matters.

Lamentations 3:22-23 says,
βBecause of the Lordβs great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning.β
Every birthday is a sign that God has carried us through another year of life. His mercy and grace have sustained us, and His plans for us continue.

Am I living for Godβs purpose?
Am I using my time to serve, grow, and love others?
Am I living my life to glorify God?
Matthew 6:19-21 tells usβ¦
“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earthβ¦ But store up for yourselves treasures in heavenβ¦ For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also”.

Recognizing our limited time on earth should help us foster a mind of humility, as we understand that God is in control, not ourselves. Whatever we pridefully hold on to will eventually be gone on this side of heaven.

Proverbs 3:5-6 says,
βTrust in the Lord with all your heart… and he will direct your paths.β
As we add another year, let us not just grow olderβlet us grow deeper in our faith and stronger in our walk with God.
A birthday is not just a celebration of how far weβve come, but a chance to ask God to lead us forward.
Let us thank Him, reflect on His purpose, and commit to walking with Him faithfully.
As we mark another year of life, ask yourself:
What will I do with the time God has given me?
I use this day to draw closer to Him and make each moment count.
These are the things on my mind today, on this day, my 69th birthday. All for Your glory, my God!
