Managing Our Emotions Biblically – 2 – By Iwalola(Lola) Ademodi Oshinowo

~ HOW TO MANAGE ANGER BIBLICALLY.

💥The emotion of anger can be both positive or negative. Positive anger is righteous indignation, being angry at sin and wrongful behavior. Such was the case when Jesus entered the temple grounds and drove out [with force] all who were buying and selling [birds and animals for sacrifice] in the temple area, and He tossed tables and chairs being used by moneychangers selling doves for sacrifice.

✝️Jesus said to them, “It is written [in Scripture], ‘My house shall be called a house of prayer’; but you are making it a robbers’ den.” – Matthew‬ ‭21‬:‭12‬-‭13‬ ‭AMP‬‬

💥On the other hand is the feeling of anger that leads to sin. By itself, feeling angry is not a sin. It is what is done in response to the feeling of anger that can lead to sin.

✝️ We are told in Ephesians‬ ‭4‬:‭26‬-‭27‬ ‭AMP‬‬ “Be angry [at sin—at immorality, at injustice, at ungodly behavior], yet do not sin;

👉🏾 do not let your anger [cause you shame, nor allow it to] last until the sun goes down.

👉🏾And do not give the devil an opportunity [to lead you into sin by holding a grudge, or nurturing anger, or harboring resentment, or cultivating bitterness].”

💥It is safe to say that anger originates from the heart. In fact Jesus Christ taught that the words and actions of a person are a reflection of their heart.

✝️Jesus tells us in Matthew‬ ‭15‬:‭18‬-19 AMP‬‬ “But whatever [word]comes out of the mouth comes from the heart, and this is what defiles and dishonors the man.”

For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies.”

💥All the actions Jesus Christ talked about can be a result of anger or other negative emotions if not controlled.

💥For example, anger and malice are considered different in the Bible, as anger is a natural emotion while malice is more sinister and based on an intention to do harm.

🔥So, how do we manage the emotion of anger?

When someone angers us, we are to manage our response biblically by remembering the Word of God in Ephesians 4:29

✝️ Ephesians‬ ‭4‬:‭29‬ ‭AMP‬‬ “Do not let unwholesome [foul, profane, worthless, vulgar] words ever come out of your mouth, but only such speech as is good for building up others, according to the need and the occasion, so that it will be a blessing to those who hear [you speak].”

‭‭

💥By being “swift to listen” and “slow to speak,” the book of James says that you can control anger or “wrath.”

✝️ The Bible condemns negative anger in James 1:19-20 AMP saying, “Understand this, my beloved brothers and sisters. Let everyone be quick to hear [be a careful, thoughtful listener], slow to speak [a speaker of carefully chosen words and], slow to anger [patient, reflective, forgiving]; for the [resentful, deep-seated] anger of man does not produce the righteousness of God [that standard of behavior which He requires from us].”

💥The Bible advises that replacing “anger” and “malice” with more positive emotions or actions (no matter how badly you don’t want to), can cultivate love and understanding.

✝️Ephesians‬ ‭4‬:‭31‬-‭32‬ ‭AMP‬‬ “Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor [perpetual animosity, resentment, strife, fault-finding] and slander be put away from you, along with every kind of malice [all spitefulness, verbal abuse, malevolence]. Be kind and helpful to one another, tender-hearted [compassionate, understanding], forgiving one another [readily and freely], just as God in Christ also forgave you.”

💥The Bible also warns, that we must make peace with others before bringing our offering to God.

✝️Matthew 5:23-24 says “So if you are presenting your offering at the altar, and while there you remember that your brother has something [such as a grievance or legitimate complaint] against you, leave your offering there at the altar and go. First make peace with your brother, and then come and present your offering.”

✝️Proverbs‬ ‭19‬:‭11‬ ‭AMP‬‬ says “Good sense and discretion make a man slow to anger, And it is his honor and glory to overlook a transgression or an offense [without seeking revenge and harboring resentment].”

💥Forgiveness and reconciliation are emphasized in the Bible, as a way to combat anger.

💥Having the self-control to regulate emotions, especially anger, is a great strength and is considered a honorable trait.

✝️Proverbs‬ ‭16‬:‭32‬ ‭AMP‬‬ tells us that He who is slow to anger is better and more honorable than the mighty [soldier], And he who rules and controls his own spirit, than he who captures a city.”

‭‭

💥Finally, I would suggest that when you experience anger:

👉🏾 Pause, and take a deep breath. Be slow to speak (practice

silence if possible)

👉🏾 Recognize your thoughts. (Identify truth or lies)

👉🏾 Pray and ask the Holy Spirit to help you

👉🏾 Recall or read Bible verses and allow God to speak to your

heart.

👉🏾 Walk away, if necessary.

NOW LET US PRAY
